Steelhead! We love them and we had a great weekend down on the Snake/Clearwater system. The Clearwater River is in great shape and 54 degrees right now making it perfect for swinging flies on dry lines finding those big fish. We had a mixed bag of A-Runs and B-Runs. There were lots of fish rolling and some of the bigger fish are definitely in the system right now. Get out there and fish it on fly before the catch and kill seasons brings all the jet boats into the river.
1,400 Steelhead in one day over Lower Granite Dam yesterday. If you are wondering if there are any fish in I would say it is a safe bet you can hook one on the lower Clearwater. Flows were cut slightly out of the NF Clearwater, However, the water temp should remain cool making all those lovely Snake River fish push up into the cooler water. Floating lines through Type 3′s are working great. Whatever steelhead fly you like to swing, go give it a shot.
Kootenai River is jumping up and down not helping the fishing much at all. There are a lot of hoppers still out as well as PMD’s starting around noon. Once the river settles down fishing will pick back up.
If you want to go fishing, go steelhead fishing, it is fun…..trout are for the summer months.
